Beautiful piece. I completely understand your suffering. My family lives far away and the older I get the worse the separation sadness sinks into my heart. I am visiting my parents and sister in a month and I'll keep the , "out of the wolf, a hair" saying in mind as I always feel desperate for the days not to go by.
My wife's family lives in Miami (we're in New York), and she misses them desperately. Growing up, most of my family was in Argentina. My parents would spend hours on the phone, burning through calling cards. It's tough any way you slice it. I'm glad you had a good trip, though.
Ah, yes, calling cards. I remember those days. Calling cards to Cuba were always expensive, presumably because of the embargo, so it ended up being a $1 a minute. I appreciate you commenting.
I feel the same way whenever I make the 30 hour trek from New Zealand to Holland. I think to myself, I would be very happy to live here again. But my children and grandchildren are in Auckland, and it will only ever be brief visits. Each time I go, my family there are so much older.
I would love to visit Cuba, especially for the music. I flew over on my way from Miami to Jamaica and put it on my bucket list, but my bucket list is very big and I want to go back to Holland, again :)

Looking forward to your travel photos!
Thank you so much. I hope you have a wonderful time with your parents and sister next month. Make lots of memories and try to savor each moment.

$1 a minute? Brutal.
Yeah, it was a rip off. Whatsapp has changed that whole industry and process, fortunately.
